Background

Holy Trinity is the only complete medieval church in Coventry and one of the largest medieval churches in England. With a spire of 72 metres (237 feet) and length of 59 metres (194 feet) it is almost cathedral size.

Above the Chancel Arch there is an early 15th century painting called the "Doom Painting". For Years it had been covered in a varnish applied in 1831 which, had gone completely black and covered the painting.

With a grant from the National Lottery, the painting has been conserved over the last 2 years and now can be seen in its full glory.

The Holy Trinity Church needed to photograph the painting from a height of 30ft and approached Focalpoint with the challenge.

Solution

Focalpoint provided an aerial photography solution for the Holy Trinity Church that enabled them to photograph the Doom Painting.

A portable telescopic mast that goes upto 50ft was wheeled into the Church and erected at the entrance.

On top of the mast was a fully controllable, high-resolution digital camera with a laptop below showing the image.

Over the course of the day, numerous photos were taken with different height settings, camera settings and changing ambient light.

The results were fantastic and will be used for comparisons, reference and marketing purposes.
